Inter NYC

Commissioned for the immersive art experience Inter NYC, I led the design and development of two interactive screens where visitors engage directly with cosmic phenomena, shaping constellations and influencing the lifecycle of stars using their movements.

One screen presents visitors with celestial patterns. Using their bodies, tracked by depth cameras, participants match the positions of stars to form constellations. Holding the correct pose allows them to progress through the experience, uncovering cosmic secrets along the way. The other screen offers a different interaction: using hand movements, visitors gather surrounding space dust to fuel a nascent star's expansion. The goal is to cause the star to grow until it reaches critical mass, collapsing into a black hole that dramatically consumes the screen.

Both experiences are powered by TouchDesigner, utilizing depth cameras for real-time body and hand tracking. Custom Python scripts manage the interaction logic and progression, while GLSL shaders generate the dynamic, responsive visuals of stars, dust, and cosmic events.

Created in collaboration with Tiago Aragona, these installations are key components of Inter's newly redesigned visitor experience. They now engage hundreds of visitors daily, offering them a unique way to interact with themes of space and creation.
